Questions During the Debrief
The debrief is the most difficult aspect for non-facilitators because it feels SCARY!
Look at FIMAGE and honestly assess yourself. But in truth, the debrief is the best part of the activity and what leads to a learning opportunity versus playing a silly game.

Tips for the debrief:
Beginning the debrief is the most difficult part. If you are unsure how to start, simply ask:
“What happened during the activity?”
Remember! DO NOT ask simple answer questions. These lead to single word answers like ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
“Was the activity fun/interesting/meaningful?”
You will receive nods or maybe a ‘Yeah’.
A better question is:
“How was the activity fun/interesting/meaningful?”, or even better
“What did you find most fun/interesting/meaningful in the activity?”
I guarantee you will accidentally ask the wrong questions. DO NOT panic. If you ask the first question accidentally, simply follow it up with an open ended question like the second set of better questions.
Be a guide in the process, DO NOT steer.
What do we mean by this? You have carefully selected an activity because you want them to learn to do XYZ better. But they are actually have a productive conversation about ABC. The tendency of non-facilitators is to steer them back to the topic of XYZ. This is a mistake. While they are not learning exactly what you want them to, the learning that IS accomplished will be extremely valuable because they are learning what is most important to them.
However, if the discussion is NOT productive in a learning capacity (read ‘Bitch Session’), GUIDE them back to learning using some facilitative behavior techniques, perhaps simply asking:
“On a scale of 1 to 10, how much are you learning in this discussion right now?”
